Namarupa - Categories of Indian Thought - About Our Name

The full intent of NAMARUPA is expressed by its subtitle, 'Categories of Indian Thought'.

Ganesha (gana[category] + isa[lord]) who is always invoked at beginnings, is well known as Lord of Categories, a scribe, patron of letters, the visible manifestation of divinity and the fundamental notion of the intertwined macrocosm (Being) and microcosm (humanity), expressed by the elephant's head above the human body.

Category is derived from the Greek (kata[to assert] + agora[publicly]), and also means the basic classifications into which objects can be put, the fundamental modes of being, or any major class of concepts, in short all that can be counted or comprehended.

In India, a vibrant living spiritual tradition exists in which all expressions of human activity are taken to be manifestations of Being. As such, their expression in the human world is only for the purpose of glorifying their essential divine origins, and as a constant reminder to live in consciousness. All and every human endeavor recognizes this in some manner and so becomes a way to live in balance.

Thus NAMARUPA Categories of Indian Thought was born to give a clear form to these traditions, especially at this point in time when they are in danger of being trivialized by current trends.
