In this beautiful image the goddess Chandika is seen riding Her great and fearsome lion, weapons gifted by the devas in her nine arms, slaying the terrifying demon Mahishasura who is released from his buffalo form below. To Her right side Maha Lakshmi calmly surveys the battle while on Her left Saraswati plays the veena. Ganesha upon his little mouse and Kartikeya riding a peacock also watch and wait. But the battle does not end here—it goes on inside our minds almost endlessly. How can we overcome our fear and confusion? One way is to cry like a baby to our mother to come to our aid. During NAVARATRI one endeavors to remember to do that through worship, chanting and reading the story of this great battle in a short but thrilling text DEVIMAHATMYA or DURGASAPTASATI.

NAVARATRI this year starts on the night of October 17 and continues through October 25. The Vijayadasami (Victory Day) is October 26.

We will be doing a short puja each evening at 8:00 PM Eastern Time (USA) on Instagram Live @rmosesnamarupa followed by reading from the DEVIMAHATMYA and some chanting. Please join if you have the time.

NOTE: During October 17-25 the daily 7:00 AM morning puja will not take place. Instead there will be the evening puja at 8:00 PM. I will resume 7:00 AM on October 26 with Vijayadasami Puja .
