When Sri B.K.S. Iyengar passed away on August 20th, the yoga world lost another of its pioneers. The contribution of Sri B.K.S. Iyengar to yoga in both India and the West was immense, and his influence filtered to many levels of practice that students who have never even heard his name take for granted: the use of props and the concept of careful, anatomical detail, to name two small examples. Likewise, when Sri K. Pattabhi Jois passed away in 2009, the yoga world lost the man who popularized the technique of vinyasa, which turned, over the course of 20 years, from a verb describing a technique to a noun indicating an entire approach to practicing yoga. Vinyasa yoga is practiced in studios all over the world, yet most people who are practicing it have no idea where it comes from. And even fewer from among the 20 million plus people practicing yoga in America alone know that both Jois and Iyengar shared the same teacher, Sri Krishnamacharya, who set them forth on the journies that would eventually contribute to a global transformation. Issue 19 of NAMARUPA is dedicated to both Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Sri B.K.S. Iyengar, who were friends and colleagues, and who together share the exceptional position of being at the forefront of the spread of yoga in both the 20th and 21st centuries. We are eternally grateful not only for their service to humanity, but for their inviting us into their sacred world of practice, knowledge and devotion. Namo Namah!
